Bangkok Neighborhood Guide for Renters — Where to Actually Live (2025)

Sukhumvit vs Sathorn? Thonglor vs Ari? An honest guide to Bangkok neighborhoods from someone who's lived there — no real estate agent BS.

By CondoReviewsThailand

TL;DR

  • Sukhumvit = expat central, convenient but touristy
  • Thonglor/Ekkamai = trendy, pricey, young professionals
  • Ari = hipster, local feel, great food scene
  • Sathorn/Silom = business district, high-rises
  • On Nut/Rama 9 = budget-friendly, improving fast

How to Use This Guide

I'm not going to give you the generic "Sukhumvit is popular with expats" advice you can find anywhere. This is the honest version — the stuff people on r/Bangkok actually tell each other.

Each neighborhood is rated on:

  • Price: ฿ to ฿฿฿฿ (฿ = budget, ฿฿฿฿ = expensive)
  • Transit: BTS/MRT accessibility
  • Food: Restaurant and cafe options
  • Nightlife: Bars, clubs, evening scene
  • Quiet: Noise levels, peace factor
  • Expat-Friendly: English spoken, international amenities

The Sukhumvit Corridor

Sukhumvit Road is the spine of expat Bangkok. The BTS Sukhumvit Line runs along it, and most foreigners live somewhere between Nana (Soi 3) and On Nut (Soi 77).

Lower Sukhumvit: Nana, Asoke, Phrom Phong

BTS Stations: Nana, Asoke, Phrom Phong
Price: ฿฿฿
Vibe: Tourist zone meets expat life

The Good:

  • Everything in English — menus, signs, people
  • Tons of restaurants from every cuisine
  • Very convenient — malls, clinics, banks all within walking distance
  • Best transit connections in the city
  • Asoke interchange = BTS + MRT in one station

The Bad:

  • Nana is next to the red light district — can feel seedy
  • Very touristy — not "real Bangkok"
  • Noisy, especially ground floor units
  • Higher prices because landlords know expats will pay
  • Traffic is brutal

Best For: First-time Bangkok residents who want convenience over character

Thonglor (Sukhumvit Soi 55)

BTS Station: Thong Lo
Price: ฿฿฿฿
Vibe: Trendy, upscale, Thai hi-so meets expats

The Good:

  • Best restaurant scene in Bangkok — from street food to fine dining
  • Amazing cafes and brunch spots
  • Trendy nightlife — rooftop bars, craft cocktails
  • The "cool" factor — this is where Bangkok's creative class hangs out
  • High-quality condos with good amenities

The Bad:

  • Expensive — expect 30-50k for a decent 1BR
  • Traffic nightmare — Thonglor Soi is always jammed
  • BTS station is at the top of the soi — long walk to most condos
  • Can feel pretentious or "trying too hard"
  • Loud on weekends near bars

Best For: Young professionals, foodies, people with budget who want lifestyle
